Yala peak is a 5550 m trekking peak which is in the upper Langtang valley of Nepal. Langtang valley is already familiar to travellers around the world. 3 to 4 days of the trek leads to the last settlement of the valley named kyangingompa. From kyangingompa one can make several day trips around the valley.
Yala peak is a two-day job from the kyangin gompa which do not require permit now. It is recommended to have a proper rest and acclimatization at kyangin.One can also first climb kyangin ri and tsergo ri before attempting yala peak.
4 to 5 hours of trek from kyangin gompa takes us to the yala peak high camp.The trail is well marked. It is also possible to climb tsergo ri and directly descent down to yala high camp which is a pasture.
Overnight camping at high camp. The high camp offers spectacular views of the mountains all around. As there is no human settlement one should carry his own food. Drinking water is available from the stream which freezes at night. Camping at that altitude with those views is a wonderful experience one should not miss. But the temperature and the oxygen level makes a long night.
From high camp, we can start early so that we can reach the top by 11am. Make sure you carry a rope axe and ice crampons if there is snow on the trail. The trail is easy if there is no snow but one should always be cautious. The trail is confusing .one should directly ascent from the high camp to the glacier and upon reaching the glacier we should climb just alongside the glacier which leads to the final summit block.
The view and feeling from the top cant be expressed in words. The summit has a 360-degree vantage. Number of mountains like Morimoto,Ghanna,Langshisha himal,Dorge lakpa,Gangchempo,ganja la,Langtang lirung etc.can be gasped.
The trip from Kathmandu to Langtang valley to yala peak costed me around Rs 25000 out of which 15000 is for the Yala peak .I took a guide who is a native of kyangin gompa. We camped a night at high camp and the following day made to the yala summit and back to kyangin. He charged me Rs 15000 which includes tent sleeping bags, light foods, and great company. It is totally worth it and cheap compared to the travel agencies in Kathmandu. So I recommend taking a guide from the Langtang itself.
